Howdy, Haunters and Hauntees,
Welcome to a new year! Last year was a wild one. I was getting my feet under me as a new mom, started a Substack, began writing my third book to date. Gained over a hundred followers, stopped writing consistently because (gestures vaguely) ~life~. I knocked down hours at my job starting in the new year so I have more time to spend writing…which means Theories of Haunting will start showing up in your inbox again very soon!
With that said, I know it’s been a while since you received a new chapter. I’m using today to recap all of the chapters I’ve written and released so far, including links to the original writing in case you want to dive back into Naomi’s ghostly problem. That way when the new chapter is released next week, you’re all caught up (plus, it’s helpful for me to go back and reread. I’ve missed Naomi, but I forgot just how much I LOVE Deb. She’s a delight).
Without further ado, the chapter recaps:
Chapter 1: The hypothesis of gravity
Naomi is haunted by a hawk while visiting the grave of her young deceased daughter.
Chapter 2: The hypothesis of numbers
Naomi snaps a picture of a gravestone with a recipe etched on it. She bakes the spritz cookies when she returns home and wakes that night to a surprise visitor in her bedroom.
Chapter 3: The hypothesis of cat behavior
The visitor is just a figment of Naomi’s imagination…or is it?
Chapter 4: The hypothesis of life barely contained
A ghost named Deb has become linked to Naomi because of the cookies she baked. Naomi flees her home.
Chapter 5: The hypothesis of the weight of secrets
She visits Sal, her estranged husband, who becomes concerned at Naomi’s wild-eyed appearance. She convinces him to visit the library, where he works, to research Deb.
Chapter 6: The hypothesis of ghost psychology
Naomi confirms that Deb is who she says she is—a psychologist born in 1919. She returns home and begins questioning Deb about her life and about how hauntings work.
Chapter 7: The hypothesis of dehumanization
Naomi becomes relentless in her questioning of Deb and an ugly memory with her daughter and husband resurfaces.
Chapter 8: The hypothesis of psychic linking
After cooking spicy eggs, Naomi and Deb begin to learn how their psychic connection works. Deb surprises Naomi by grabbing her hand and transporting her to a foreign time and place.
Chapter 9: The hypothesis of carnivorous botany
Naomi relives one of Deb’s memories as a young girl. When she comes to the present, she is sick and livid.
Chapter 10: The hypothesis of human error
At work, Naomi ponders why the bioskins she is trying to grow are rotting and how she can get rid of the ghost that is haunting her. She begins writing questions, possible theories, and future experimentations. The theories of haunting have begun.
Chapter 11: The hypothesis of supernatural inquiry
